I am an undergraduate student studying economics & psychology. I will be making videos about interesting ideas/events in the world of social science.
The Fall of a Superstar Psychologist
Dan Ariely is a titan in the field of behavioral economics. His work has been published in numerous peer reviewed journals and routinely cited in academia and popular media. He has consulted for top companies and governments internationally. While still revered in the mainstream, academics are beginning to question the foundations of Ariely's work. Are his most influential findings robust, and more importantly, could they be fraudulent?
Corrections: The Israeli Ministry of Finance paid Ariely 17 million ILS (not USD). This amounts to 4.65 million USD.
While reading the emails at 10:25 and 10:51 I accidentally read Aimee's response before reading Dan's original question. Thanks to those who pointed out the mistakes.
Thank you for watching my first video.

Wish l had the skills to construct formal messages of disagreement like Aimee
I read "Predictably Irrational" almost decade ago. It was not convincing, because it defied my own life experiences. Where it found interesting results, the book jumps to simplistic conclusions. Like "people who sign at the top are more honest" what?
The video is amazing, but it would be so much better if you had removed this awful background song before posting it 😭😭😭😭
The fall? Look at Jordan Peterson and the mess he continues to make..
Fraud is the norm IMO.
Check out how often the mass-produced "New York Times Bestsellers" come from the Ivy Leagues. Supposedly the pinnacles of intellectual rigor. But if you look close you can clearly see they are actually pushing all sorts of ideas like Arrely's "scientific psychology"." Yet no one can replicate the majority of these studies! But that hasn't stopped governments from implementing these bogus, junk science ideas into cult-like programs such as the so-called "Nudge Unit" within there Cabinet Office of there British prime minister, David Cameron! It has since broke off from the government and now is only orly partially funded by the State. Now it can operate FREE from government control - or oversight!
Wait! You're saying he fabricated data on studies to show how often and easily people lie? The jokes write themselves. Unfortunately, they aren't funny.
Disgusting. hate to see that i need to learn his work in my university
Ariely and Gina F. both think of honesty and integrity as nothing more than curiosities of brain chemistry to be explored rather than real moral principles to be obeyed. Most modern academics, if you asked them, would probably plainly admit that they don’t believe that objective morality even exists. So none of this should be surprising and we should expect even more cheating and dishonesty in academia, barring a massive cultural change. These universities and institutions were founded by deeply religious people, and it was while operating under those principles that they earned their good reputations. Without that foundation, there is no “why” to ethics that isn’t a matter of personal opinion.
Please rethink (delete) background music.
1:09 ... Like maybe I'm just common to take a little early. But it has the same energy as someone who's Is with a straight face trying to tell you that a chess master cheated using a vibrating butt plug To send him morris code messages about some kind of hidden strategy That could only be delivered as a message through this medium And how that's not a completely ridiculous assertion.... Made me think of it so I had to Bring up the most ridiculous "scandal" in the history of competition Mostly because it makes me laugh
not surprised
Dishonest people doing research on honesty/dishonesty is the greatest thing ever 😂
Hope u doing good with school <3 This is type of yt “niche scandals” i wanna hear about 🤝🏽
the music makes this unbearable
This background "music" was terrible. It's a 20 minute video man...
Having Delta dental come out and disavow a statement that would be damning for them to agree with is not really a solid basis to disbelieve someone. They other points don't reflect well on him though.
I disliked bc of the background music
Jews
Yuo need a real Camers University , then sdnd the scamers to learn to scam. Then send to jail
way too complicated for my little fragile brain
Sad
Voice and background music is similar to the documentary Loose Change. AI? AI is ruining every platform.
He is Israeli
What? Speak louder, I can't hear you over a circus bear getting a clarinet enema while it is doing its number.
I liked to spread awareness.
just imagine taking anyone with the title [blank] economist at all seriously, lol.
ngl i 100% believe the dental cavity thing is true
Bro you didnt even choose a 5 second loop that fits properly
The minute my ears started focusing on the repeating (!) trumpet melody in the background, I was almost unable to follow the essay. Why do UA-camrs do this? In my opinion, there's no need for any holding pattern Muzak in these educational video essays. (Great work, though.)
ya, the music is annoying. i have to agree. sorry. i am out.
gosh darn it. i think i read his book and now have to reformat my thinking
Do you have IRB approval to subject us to this music loop? 😅
4:45 😂😂😂
I don’t like the music either- but confirmation bias exists in all scientific disciplines for the exact reasons you mention.
Damn, the irony😂
Everyone speaking at a TEDx talk is a fraud
Why did this video need music at all?? The trumpets make it unwatchable lmao
I agree on how annoying the background music is. If the facts reported in the video are accurate, they’re pretty damning to Ariely, and the video author should be thanked for the work done.
It's funny that I see it after the capitalist Catholic was lying to me that he doesn't have a girlfriend when he was engaged for 4 months and tried to cheat on her multiple times... Irony of algorithms
Let’s go . Those are the people teach our generation. Let’s find more from HYPSM
Seems like a good video but I couldn’t listen to that ridiculous trumpet playing the same few notes over and over and over. Why do you do this?
This should have been a great episode, but I just couldn't take that trumpet in the background. There is NO way that over a million people listened to the very end. ... But surprisingly I made it to the very end.
Oh, I thought this was going to be about Jordan Peterson, my mistake.
It is unreal that you use the same loop of music for an entire twenty+ minute video. It's 2 fucking chords. God damn, what is wrong with you?
Dentists should take him to the cleaners. As a physician, I have heard this claim about dentists many times, now I know where it comes from. Having a charlatan bashing an entire industry without evidence is libel.
"Predictably Irrational", was he outing himself?
I'm supposed to trust a guy who can't be bothered to match his socks?
Probably did it for attention
Please do something about the sound editing.
Early.
